A tour around the Gießhübl-Eichberg and Wasserspreng biosphere reserve core zones.
The new Gießhübl route starts at the foot of the Gießhübler Kuhheide, a protected dry grassland typical of the Thermenregion. The route climbs gently uphill on asphalt into the forest and continues on gravel towards the Parapluie route, where you turn left. Ride past the beautiful Seewiese meadow to the Höllensteinhaus junction. You can ride up to this via the Höllenstein feeder road or follow the route to the left down past a biosphere reserve core zone to Wassergspreng. Core zonesare protected and are not used for timber harvesting. The mountain bike route turns into such a special area of the Vienna Woods, namely the Gießhübl core zone, at Wassergspreng and leads you back up to Gießhübel on gentle forest roads around the Eichberg. Special attention must be paid to the protected nature and the ban on walking off the signposted route!
Before every ride, check that the brakes, tires, and suspension fork/shock are in good working order. Always ride with an eye out for hazards and at a controlled speed, and choose a route that suits the group’s riding ability and the terrain. The Fair Play rules must be observed at all times. Single/shared trails, as well as built trails in trail parks and trail centers, often feature rocks, roots, steep sections, steps, and sharp turns that require a certain level of riding skill. If in doubt, simply dismount and walk your bike.
A safe and roadworthy mountain bike is a prerequisite for all routes. A helmet and gloves provide protection in the event of a fall, and knee and elbow pads can be added when riding on single or shared trails. A modern mountain bike with disc brakes and sufficient tire tread is recommended. For single and shared trails rated red difficulty or higher, a full-suspension bike with modern geometry is recommended. Tools, a tire lever, a pump, and a spare tube will help in case of a flat tire. You should also carry enough food and drink, as well as a cell phone and a windbreaker or rain jacket.
The new Gießhübl trail begins at the foot of the Gießhübler Kuhheide, a protected dry grassland typical of the Thermenregion. The trail leads gently uphill on asphalt into the forest and continues on gravel toward the Parapluie trail, where you turn left. Passing the beautiful Seewiese, you ride to the intersection at the Höllensteinhaus. You can take the Höllenstein shuttle up to the hut, or follow the route to the left downhill through a core zone of the Biosphere Reserve to Wassergspreng. At Wassergspreng, turn left; after 350 meters, turn right over a small bridge and then right again onto gentle forest roads to circle around the Eichberg. On the way back up to Gießhübel, keep left twice to return to the tour’s starting point. At the first intersection, the right fork leads to Hinterbrühl and the Anninger MTB Area; at the second intersection, you can turn right onto the access road via Schulgasse to Gießhübel.
Directions to the Anninger MTB Area via the Hinterbrühl–Eichberg feeder route to the Kiental Route, or the Gießhübl–Eichberg feeder route for the descent https://www.wienerwald.info/a-zubringer-giesshuebl-eichberg
