Meiereiwiese & Mödling Castle
Mödling is considered the botanical and zoological heart of Europe. The rich diversity of species is the result of different climatic, morphological and geological influences. The Mödling municipal forest therefore attracts scientists and recreationists from near and far who want to experience the diversity of species, treasures and rarities. The sustainable forest development concept not only meets the requirements of counteracting climate change and at the same time allows energy wood to be produced for the Mödling biomass heating plant, but also takes into account habitat protection and the demands of modern wildlife management. There is plenty of scope for creative recreational use. Biking and hiking trails are strictly separated and not only lead past exciting natural elements and historic staffage buildings, but also offer fascinating views of the Vienna Basin and beyond the national border. With the forest classroom and its own forest education concept, the focus is primarily on young forest visitors. They should get to know, respect and learn about the forest in a playful way.

The green route follows the same path as the red one all the way to the hunting lodge. The trail now leads to the legendary Babenberg Castle in Mödling, which was transformed into a picturesque castle ruin under Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein. On the descent, a wonderful view opens up across the Meiereiwiese toward the Husarentempel and the Matterhörndl. The trail passes the “Märchenteich” on its way back to the starting point.
After this hike, which takes about half an hour, we highly recommend exploring the surrounding area. For example, visit the Hussar Temple or the Mödling Castle Ruins, or take a trip to the towns of Hinterbrühl or Mödling and treat yourself to some delicious local cuisine.
